City foundation day

Johanngeorgenstadt was founded on February 23, 1654, the youngest mountain town in the Ore Mountains, by Bohemian exiles who were persecuted in their own hometown of Horní Blatná (Platten) because of their faith. They settled at the foot of the Fastenberg and were allowed to found a town with the permission of Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony.

Every year, the town foundation day commemorates the history of our town's foundation. Traditionally, this is always celebrated on the Saturday after February 23rd in the town church.

Special highlights of the celebrations are the miners' procession and the ecumenical church service. In addition, people who have rendered special services to the town, their association etc. are honored on the town's foundation day.

Open Monument Day

Open Monument Day is a nationwide day of action on which monuments that are otherwise closed to the public are opened to the public. Johanngeorgenstadt also takes part in this day every year. While museums such as the Pferdegöpel and the Heimatstube attract visitors with a program organized especially for this day, the former Pestalozzi School and the Farbmühle in Unterjugel, among others, have also been open to visitors.

Original Johanngeorgenstadt candle arch festival

Every year on the 3rd weekend in Advent, our Schwibbogenfest attracts numerous guests to the mountain town. Taking place on the miner's square, our tranquil Christmas market consists of stalls, most of which are run by local associations and businesses. Whether food, drinks, handmade products, textiles and much more - visitors are offered a wide range of products.

The Schwibbogenfest starts with the traditional mountain parade, consisting of the living Schwibbogen, the mayor and town councillors, various miners' associations from the region and our Johanngeorgenstadt brass band. The program consists of various highlights, such as a visit from Santa Claus or a live band. There is definitely something for young and old. The Christmas market ends on Sunday evening with the 'Magic Night Sky'.
